With a heavy heart it is time to post on the passing of our faithful sailing companion Schooner. He was a tiny stray puppy when he found Captain Tim, an abandoned wild dog in need of a loving home. He found one aboard BELUGA.
Schooner grew into a real pistol, he had an independent streak and he knew from a young age that he was the Admiral! He also knew immediately who was missing their dog back home, or feeling a little seasick, and would cuddle up to them. Nothing provides comfort like a dog.
As soon as the anchor was down Schooner would launch off the bow of the boat and swim ashore. All the deserted beaches in the Turks and Caicos were his. When it was time to sail home, he would walk upstream of the boat to have an easier time swimming with the current. He would climb the ladder as easy as a human, shake himself off and head straight to the nearest person with a towel.
Schooner also had a sense when Jojo was near and was usually the first to let us know when our friendly dolphin came to visit.
After 16 years of sailing, entertaining, loving and living Schooner died naturally in Captain Tim’s arms.
He will be missed and remembered fondly.
Read his biography below.
Schooner is the luckiest potcake in the world. Potcakes are the local wild dogs of the Turks and Caicos Islands and Bahamas and have been here since before Christopher Columbus made landfall on Grand Turk. You can find out more about them at www.potcakefoundation.com
Schooner found Captain Tim in 2000 when he was only a few weeks old and was brought up aboard BELUGA. He is undoubtedly the Admiral and loves to squeeze into the seat with you, just to remind you whose boat it really is!
